A planetary gearset, also referred to as epicyclic gearing, has three components; the sun gear, the planet gears' carrier and one or more planet gears, and the ring gear. With these three components, different gear ratios can be produced depending on which gear you use as input, which gear you use as output, and which gear is held still. The ratio of input rotation to output rotation is dependent upon the number of teeth in each gear, and on which gear is held stationary.
